India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval held high-level talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on August 25 as the two countries resumed discussions on the long-standing India-China boundary dispute.
The meeting marked the 25th round of Special Representatives’ Talks, a mechanism established in 2003 to address the complex boundary question between the two Asian neighbours. Discussions focused on maintaining peace and stability along the border, including the Line of Actual Control (LAC), while also exploring ways to improve overall bilateral relations.
Doval’s visit comes at an important time for India-China relations. Ties between New Delhi and Beijing have remained strained following years of tensions along the Himalayan border, although both sides have recently increased diplomatic engagement and taken steps towards stabilising relations.
The talks also carry additional significance ahead of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12–13, where Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit India, although his participation had not yet been officially confirmed at the time of reporting.
Beyond the border dispute, Doval and Wang Yi discussed broader bilateral, regional and international issues. Doval also met Chinese Vice President Han Zheng during his Beijing visit, with discussions touching on peace along the border and the future development of India-China relations.
The outcome of the latest talks will be closely watched, as both India and China attempt to manage their differences while exploring the possibility of a more stable relationship between the two major Asian powers.
