New Delhi: A fresh political controversy has erupted after reported differences within the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process came to light. An investigative report published by a news outlet on September 23 claims that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi formally raised objections to various decisions at least 14 times over the past 10 months.
According to the report, their objections concerned the addition, deletion and re-inclusion of names in electoral rolls, changes to Form 6, and control over the voter database. Following the publication of the report, opposition leaders have raised questions about the role of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) chief Uddhav Thackeray has demanded the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner from office. He has also called for fresh elections in Maharashtra, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Sambit Patra has described internal differences within the Election Commission as part of the democratic process.
