The series is already in India’s pocket, so you might expect a quiet final match. After the last two games, nobody believes that.
India and West Indies meet today in the third ODI at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. India lead 2-0. The toss is at 1:30 PM IST, and the first ball is at 2 PM. It is the first men’s ODI ever played at this ground, so there is no history to go by on how the pitch will behave.
The story so far. India won the opener in Thiruvananthapuram by eight wickets. West Indies posted 295/7, but Kuldeep Yadav took 4 for 40, and Virat Kohli (139 not out) and Shubman Gill (110) chased it down with 50 balls to spare.
Then came Guwahati, a night that will be talked about for a long time. West Indies scored 405/7, the first time they had ever crossed 400 in an ODI. India still won with 39 balls left. Gill hit 223 not out off 133 balls, the fastest double century in ODI history, and Rohit Sharma added 101 as the pair shared a 255-run opening stand. Gill has now scored 333 runs in two innings.
What to watch today
- India’s bowling. Prasidh Krishna is out with a hamstring injury and Anshul Kamboj has joined the squad. Mohammed Siraj is expected back after sitting out the first two matches. Kuldeep already has six wickets in the series.
- West Indies’ batting. John Campbell and Shai Hope have both scored hundreds in this series, and Amir Jangoo has been steady in the middle order. The batters have done their part, but the bowlers have struggled to defend big totals.
- A fresh venue. With no ODI record at the ground, the toss and first few overs will tell us a lot. The weather is expected to be sunny.
India are favourites, and a 3-0 finish would be a fitting end to the series. West Indies would love to avoid that, and a side that scored 405 will not come out quietly.
