The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Koyel Mallick as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-election in West Bengal. The announcement was made on October 4, 2026, ahead of the election to the Rajya Sabha seat that became vacant following Koyel Mallick’s resignation earlier this year.
Koyel Mallick had earlier been nominated by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) as a Rajya Sabha candidate in 2026. She was elected to the Upper House and took the oath as a Rajya Sabha member on April 6, 2026. During her brief tenure, she was also made a member of parliamentary committees related to Labour, Textiles and Skill Development.
However, Koyel Mallick resigned from the Rajya Sabha on July 16, 2026, only a few months after taking the oath. Her resignation left the West Bengal Rajya Sabha seat vacant, leading the Election Commission to announce a by-election to fill the seat.
The Election Commission has scheduled the by-election for October 16, 2026. Voting will take place from 9 am to 4 pm, while the counting of votes will be held on the same day. The last date for filing nominations is October 6, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until October 9.
With the BJP now naming Koyel Mallick as its candidate, she will contest for the same Rajya Sabha seat that she had previously occupied as a TMC nominee. The election will decide who will hold the vacant seat for the remaining term.
Koyel Mallick’s name was formally included in the BJP’s candidate list announced on October 4. The upcoming election will therefore see her contesting the Rajya Sabha seat again, this time as a BJP candidate, after resigning from the same seat in July.
