A shocking incident has triggered fresh political tension in West Bengal after Chandranath Rath, a close aide of senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead in Madhyamgram on Tuesday night. Police officials described the incident as a “planned and targeted attack,” sparking outrage among BJP supporters across the state.
According to initial police reports, Chandranath Rath was attacked by unidentified assailants in the Madhyamgram area of North 24 Parganas. Witnesses claimed multiple gunshots were heard before the attackers fled the scene. Rath was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The murder has intensified the already heated political atmosphere in West Bengal. BJP leaders alleged that the killing was politically motivated and demanded a high-level investigation into the matter. Senior party members accused the state administration of failing to maintain law and order ahead of the upcoming political season.
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari strongly condemned the attack and called it a “cold-blooded political murder.” He demanded immediate arrests and strict action against those responsible. BJP workers staged protests in several parts of the state, demanding justice for Rath.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Police stated that a detailed investigation is underway. Officials confirmed that forensic teams have collected evidence from the crime scene, and CCTV footage from nearby areas is being examined. Police sources believe the attackers may have been tracking Rath’s movements before carrying out the assault.
The incident has once again raised concerns over political violence in West Bengal, where clashes between rival political groups have frequently made headlines. Opposition parties have repeatedly accused the ruling administration of failing to curb such incidents, while the government maintains that strict legal action is taken in all criminal cases.
As investigations continue, political reactions are expected to intensify in the coming days, with the incident likely to become a major flashpoint in Bengal politics
