Taiwan is increasing its defensive measures amid ongoing tensions with China. The annual Han Kuang military exercises began on August 5 and are now designed to address scenarios rather than sticking to a fixed script. As part of these drills, the troops practice responding to a possible Chinese attack, including managing military command, addressing communication breakdowns, mobilizing reservists, moving weapons, protecting convoys, and assisting civilians if supply lines are cut.

Taiwan is also adopting more military tactics and equipment typical of the United States, such as the M1A2T Abrams tanks, to deter Beijing by making any attempt to invade or block the island more difficult and costly.

Taipei is aiding these initiatives by raising its defense budget. The budget proposed for 2027 will exceed NT$1 trillion, that is approximately US$31 billion, representing more than 3% of its GDP.

At the same time, Washington is considering an additional arms package for Taiwan, potentially totaling as much as $14 billion, possibly including advanced interceptor missiles. However, the deal has not yet been finalized.

Beijing sees Taiwan as part of China and is firmly against U.S. military support for the island. Taiwan, however, does not accept China’s claim of sovereignty. With both sides increasing their military activities, the Taiwan Strait remains a major focus in global politics.
