New Delhi, August 10, 2026: The Union government has agreed to discuss the ongoing student protest issue in Parliament, with Home Minister Amit Shah expected to reply during the debate. The assurance was given during the Lok Sabha Business Advisory Committee meeting chaired by Speaker Om Birla on Monday.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju told Opposition leaders that the government was ready to take up the students’ concerns and that Amit Shah would respond to the discussion. The government also urged the Opposition to avoid disruptions and allow Parliament to function smoothly.
The controversy is linked to police action during a student march towards Parliament on July 20, the opening day of the Monsoon Session. Opposition parties have been demanding an explanation from the government over the police response and treatment of protesters.
Amit Shah’s expected statement could now provide an opportunity for the government and Opposition to present their positions on the issue. The debate is likely to be closely watched as Parliament continues its Monsoon Session.
